Figuring out what are big rocks in your life is important in one's development. Big rocks are those things that you want to focus on and hammer away at, so that at the end of the day you feel like you have accomplished something. All too often, however, we end up choosing to focus on small rocks. Those trifling items that take up our time, and fill up our basket, so that nothing else fits in.
For this reason, one needs to put in big rocks first, and let the small ones fill in the space between.
So, what's a big rock?
Big rocks are the important items in your life that you value and believe will lead you to grow, develop, and contribute to the world around you. In order to focus on the big rocks, you have to know what is important to you, what you believe in, what is your truth. For me, that means finding time to think, write, and read each day. Those are my big rocks. For others, the formula is totally different.
When I don't focus in on those big rocks, and what is important each day, I end up feeling a little empty. I end up feeling like I am lacking in purpose and direction. Even if it is just for a short time each day, one needs to hammer at the important items.
The small items have a tendency to fill up our mental inbox, or our literal inbox for that matter. But, some items can definitely wait. Let them fill in the small around your designated big rocks. How we focus our time and attention is what makes us who we are. If one's attention and intention is constantly darting around to the next thing, they won't get much done.
One has to choose what is important. Then, one has to make time to tackle what is important. If one part of that equation is missing, more than likely the person will feel out of whack. Unless you focus on what you believe is important, then you won't feel like you are growing and developing.
